So, last month I spent six nights in the hospital! Diverticulitis. It is an intensly painful condition. I am fine now!
There were SO MANY acts of kindness by so many people while I was sick and recovering. Here is one.
Never think that you can’t make a difference. I was in bed, in the hospital,it was early evening, my third, perhaps forth night there. All my family and friends were gone for the day. I called my friend Jeanne, who lives in New Jersey. We were chatting and I was apologizing for having dropped my phone on her earlier in my stay. She had called and while we were talking I just couldn’t hold on to it anymore and I had to say goodbye quickly and lay the phone down. Well, it happened again! Suddenly, I was very very tired and the pain became greater and I said Jeanne, I have to go. And she said, what can I do, shall I call Asher? And I said yes, call Asher, and then dropped the phone and rang the bell for the nurse.
The nurse came and gave me pain medicine that made me dizzy and then he made my bed flat and left. I was there alone, dizzy, in pain and a little frightened, actually. Mainly, alone.
And then the door opened and Faith walked in. She quietly sat by my bed and started rubbing my forehead. She stayed there for about an hour. She quietly read a book, was reading on her phone too, but always was touching me letting me know she was there. I can not express how comforting it was to have her presence. I was not alone. It was a powerful thing she and Jeanne did. It made no difference that Jeanne was so far away. She did not know how to get in touch with Asher, but she called Faith and Faith dropped everything and came. Between them they brought love and compassion and light to a dark time. This is love in action. This is how we make a difference. This is a powerful example for all of us, that the time is NOW, and the opportunities are here, and even physical distance can’t stop us from helping someone.
I thank you both. For helping me, being there for me, and for being what I aspire to be. I love you.
